Bee & Butterfly House

This easy-to-build project will invite bees, butterflies, and other beneficial bugs to your garden with this attractive habitat.

Just outside my shop window lies my little vegetable patch, and the project you see here aims to provide a place for all my insect helpers while combining my woodworking with my gardening passion. The house is made in three sections: a tall central tower flanked by shorter additions. The drawing above iluustrates the the construction details using a simple tongue and dado joint. Several species of bees raise their brood in tunnels. I used two shop-made solutions as well as purchasing tubes to fill the openings in the house. You can use any or all of these processes to create your tubes. This is a fun project that you can start on this weekend, make it your own with your favorite colors, and have it ready to put in the backyard this spring.
