Drop-Front Desk

Keep your home office or spare room organized with an attractive piece of furniture that’s as practical as it is stylish.

I admit it — my computer desk and office are always a source of frustration when it comes to keeping things presentable. The tangle of cords and stacks of paper always look disorganized and messy. So when I set out to build a functional and attractive desk, I had some definite ideas about what it needed. First, it had to keep the computer case, printer, and other peripherals out of sight but still allow them to stay cool. Second, I wanted it to have plenty of room to store the working papers and documents that are inevitably lying around. Third, and most important, I didn’t want it to look like a computer desk. This traditional design satisfies all my requirements. It looks great and keeps everything organized. Best of all, it’s a straightforward project to build. I relied on hardwood veneer plywood (I chose cherry) and hardwood edging and facing. Now my office is both neater and more efficient.
