Shop-Built Cabinet Scraper

This classic scraper is the perfect tool for smoothing wood surfaces. Plus, it looks great doing it.

There is nothing quite like the look and feel of a glass-smooth surface on a cherished project. But getting that finished surface isn’t always so easy. This is especially true when working with highly-figured woods like the birds-eye maple in the photo above. That’s where a cabinet scraper comes in handy. I designed and built the one you see here based on an antique example. It’s not difficult to build and it works great. Plus, it can be customized for your own personal comfort. A block of hardwood and some off-the-shelf hardware are all you need to get started.
